New Trends for the Home - Think Boutique Hotel Style

By Kathy Peterson Inspired

It’s that time again to start thinking about a new year and all the things that we can do around the house to make our home more comfortable and enjoyable than in past years.  So what’s hot for decorating in 2008?  Think global luxury with a wide variety of styles and projects to suit any Do-It-Yourselfer!  Luckily, it’s never been easier to create a lux home to suit your lifestyle with these simple to-do ideas from upscale hotel suites.

Think Boutique Hotel Style

I recently found abundant design inspiration at the Hotel Gansevoort in Chelsea, New York during my stay in Manhattan during a business trip in December.  So what did I gain from all this inspiration?  Lots of lux DIY projects that I know you can do yourself!

Now let’s face it, Manhattan boutique hotel suites can be pretty pricey to nest in but surprisingly, easy to enough to replicate on your own for a rich and stylish look for any room in your home. How so? Read on!

• Simple projects like a high-style, minimalist coffee table can be an easy DIY project that you can create from a recycled door panel or large cabinet door for the table top and scrap lumber for the legs.  Simple lines in this Scandinavian style table make this DIY project a fairly fast and easy one provided you’re using power tools and sturdy materials!

• Create an eclectic mix of furniture  by combining a variety of textures using recycled wood or even thrift store finds such as vintage metal table sanded down to create a brushed metal finish for a modern and clean look.

• Create a custom look for your TV by creating a built-in boxed frame that extends out from the wall to house a flat screen TV.  Now granted, this may require some carpentry skills and an extra helping hand but this simple style of built-in is not a complex project and it will create the ultimate in your own unique custom style.

• Something as simple as adding a splash of color by sewing (or gluing together) two squares of fabric to create a bold pillow can really punch up your space.  Go minimal with only one colorful pillow or add a few more with different patterns and shapes to wake up any room in an instant!

• Mix and match chairs will always create excitement to any room.  Okay, matchy- matchy just doesn’t cut in my design book!  So why not shake up your space by using several styles of furniture (new or used).  Or  put in a little bit more elbow grease and  refurbish some old furniture you have buried around the house and add color by painting the wood dark hues of brown or kick it out with a bold color for another bright and colorful look.
